Fantasy Zone (ファンタジーゾーン) is a shoot 'em up video game developed by Sega and the first title in the Fantasy Zone series, originally released in March 20 1986 for arcades. It was ported the same year to the Sega Master System, and the next year to the MSX home computer and Nintendo Famicom by Pony Canyon and Sunsoft respectively. It was later ported to the NEC TurboGrafx-16 by NEC Avenue, to the NES by Tengen, and to the Sharp X68000 home computer by Dempa.
In 1997 Sega ported the game to the Sega Saturn as part of their Sega Ages line, and in 2003 to the Sony PlayStation 2 as part of the Sega Ages 2500 Series. In 2014 the game received a 3D remake on the Nintendo 3DS titled 3D Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa Bros.. M2 was responsible for all of these ports. M2 also put it on the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2/Sega Genesis Mini 2 as one of the games in it's line up.
Story[]
Many years ago, there was a "Fantasy Zone" beyond the universe. The hero Opa-Opa (this is you) has risen determinedly to protect this Fantasy Zone from the evil hands of the enemy.
It is now Space Year 6216. The official currency between the planets was disturbed, and all the planets fell into panic. From the official investigation of the Space Association (Space Guild), it was found that someone manipulated the Menon aliens, made them steal foreign currency, and used it to build a huge fortress in the Fantasy Zone.
In order to thwart the enemy's ambitions, Opa-Opa immediately heads for the Fantasy Zone, but...
Gameplay[]
Fantasy Zone's gameplay is similar to Williams's Defender: instead of the screen continually scrolling in one direction, the player can freely move left and right, with the camera following the player movement and levels wrapping up in both directions.
The player controls the Opa-Opa, a sentient ship. The first button fires the main gun on the direction Opa-Opa is facing, while the second button drops air-to-ground bombs. The objective in each level is to destroy a fixed number of Bases found on the level; a small radar on the bottom of the screen shows the location of all remaining Bases. Once all bases are destroyed the boss of the level appears, with Opa-Opa automatically facing it.
Shops[]
Defeated enemies in the levels drop price-varying coins which the player can collect. These are used as currency on the shops which appear once every level, where the player can purchase weapons, engines, etc. Purchased weapons have limited ammunition, with Opa-Opa reverting to his standard weapon once they're depleted. Due to inflation once an item is purchased, it becomes more expensive for the next time the player wants to purchase it.
